Science concludes dogs also dream: Actually, dogs or other mammals have dreams and the things they dream about are as lively as human beings’.
If we look at our dogs, we probably realize that when they sleep they usually startle, or wag their tail and groan as if dreaming. Scientists have proven that dogs actually sleep like humans. And they can also dream of a day where they are just as fruitful as we are. Of course they will only dream about what is close to them, just as we would dream of the movies, stories, everyday activities we have just experienced.
With dogs, they will dream of a bone or something they just played today. For a medium sized dog, within the first 20 minutes they will fall asleep with regular breathing. But then the eyes will move inside the closed eyelids and the breath becomes erratic, at which point they have entered the dream.
Scientists point out that smaller dogs dream more often, but often shorter dreams and smaller dogs dream less but have long dreams. Smaller dogs have more time to fall asleep than older dogs. Dr. Nicholas Dodman, an animal behavior expert, argues that it is possible to conclude that dogs also sleep as humans because their brain activity is similar to how the human brain functions in sleep.
More dream studies have been done on other mammals to find out whether all mammals dream or are new breeders capable of this. People often wonder if our dogs will dream of living like humans and are they dreaming about chasing cats like they do every day.
“Based on the structure and activity of the brain, we have reason to believe that most mammals are dreaming," said Dr. Stanley Coren, University of British Columbia’s professor emeritus of psychology. "Cats dream and horses dream, but the nature of their dreams and cycles is completely different."
Until now, many people still think that dreams are only in people when we are thinking creatures, having developed brains and superior cognitive abilities. With the discovery of dreams in animals, scientists expect in the future we can learn more deeply about the mysteries of the brain.
